UMCOR School Kits
August means it’s time to assemble UMCOR (United Methodist Committee on Relief) school kits at Asbury. Pick up a school bag at church and fill it with the requested supplies or place $10 in the offering and we’ll do the shopping for you! Items for the school kit include: 1 pair blunt scissors, 1 box of 24 crayons, 3 spiral notebooks, 1 pack of loose-leaf paper, 1 hand-held pencil sharpener, 1 ruler, 6 unsharpened pencils and 1 eraser. Our goal is 200 kits! Please return filled bags to the Hospitality Room by September 9.
The Missions Committee is once again sponsoring a Farmers’ Market on Sunday mornings now through mid-September. Bring your extra produce or pick up what you need! All donations go to Mission Café and Bakery projects: Dakotas Hunger Grants, UMCOR World Hunger and Poverty, and UMC Global Health.
The Lydia Project
Do you love to knit or crochet? The General Conference of the United Methodist Church will meet in Minneapolis in 2020. Every delegate, dignitary, bishop and spouse will be presented with a hand made scarf which will serve as a memento of the General Conference. Help is needed to knit or crochet 10,000 scarves. The scarves are to be made with royal purple acrylic yarn. (Think the royal purple color of the Minnesota Vikings.) Please do not use lavender or variegated yarn. The pattern can be the creator’s choice or you can get pattern ideas at www.dakotasumc.org/lydiaproject. The scarf needs to be 6-7 inches wide and 60 inches long. You can add fringe, but the scarf needs to measure 60 inches long prior to adding the fringe. After completion of the scarf a tag will be added to it which will tell the City and State where the scarf was made as well as the person who made it and the name of the church. Each scarf will be put into a Ziploc bag and brought to the 2019 Dakotas Annual Conference to then be taken to the 2020 General Conference. Please contact Trudy Baird at 360-9786 if you would like to help with the Lydia
Project or if you have any questions.
Asbury is partnering with other United Methodist Churches – and Samaritan’s Feet – to help provide new shoes to Sioux Falls area children.
Samaritan’s Feet shares hope with children in the U.S. and around the world by washing their feet, giving them a new pair of shoes and helping them believe that their dreams can come true. www.samaritansfeet.org
Asbury set a goal of providing 180 pairs of shoes ($3,600). We have raised $4,078.51 for 203 pairs of shoes! Thank you!! This year’s shoe distribution is Saturday, August 18. Volunteers are needed to register, wash feet, distribute shoes, etc. Sign up to volunteer at: www.samaritansfeet.org/Hayward.
New Kitchen Countertops Needed
The Trustees need $3,500 to replace the countertops in the kitchen. We have raised $5,015.00. Thank you for making this project possible!!

605 Breakthrough Prayer Cards
Asbury has a special prayer that we ask members and friends to offer every day at 6:05 a.m. and/or 6:05 p.m. Please pick up a Prayer Card from the usher’s table in the hallway near the sanctuary doors. Thanks for praying that God will breakthrough and do new things in us and in Christ’s church. Thanks!
